„It was all born by their deep attraction for Finland's gothic metal bands“. Tja, besser hätte man es wohl nicht beschreiben können, denn würde auf dem Infozettel nicht Triest als Herkunftsort stehen, ich hätte wohl sehr wahrscheinlich auch auf Finnland getippt. Damit sollten sich Hardcore Metaller, die die Kutte selbst zum Schlafen nicht ausziehen, ganz schnell und angewidert abwenden, hier ist nichts für euch zu holen.

Ein herzliches Willkommen an die, die jetzt noch da sind, hier gibt es für euch vielleicht einen kleinen Geheimtipp abzugrasen. Die Musik von SO COLD ist definitiv etwas für ruhige Stunden, so viel steht schon mal fest. Doch wie stellt sich das Ganze hier dar? Wie bereits erwähnt, kommt das Grundgerüst ganz klar auf Finnland, die Lieder sind immer nach dem typischen HIM/ 69EYES Schema aufgebaut. Strophen mit ruhiger Gitarren- und Drumuntermalung, wohingegen beim Refrain dann der Ausbruch kommt. Auf eben erwähnten Refrain wird wohl auch am meisten Wert gelegt, dieser fällt dementsprechend auch sehr eingängig und catchy aus. Stücke wie „Kiss the Scythe“ wirken mit ihrem Chorus beinahe schon massentauglich, was ich in diesem Fall keineswegs abwertend meine. Eher liegt es an der Stimme von Michele, dessen klarer Gesang mir, in seiner melancholisch-verzweifelten Art, wirklich sehr gut gefällt. Hier hebt man sich dann auch ein wenig von den finnischen Kollegen ab, erinnert mich sein Organ doch eher an selige HEROES DE SILENCIO Zeiten, gibt sofort einen Pluspunkt! Lieder wie „...Rain“ hingegen verweisen auch auf den ein oder anderen Alternative-Einfluss, gerade die Gitarrenarbeit erinnert doch stark an SOAD, wohingegen „Opening“ mich an PARADISE LOST in der „Icon“ Phase denken lässt.

Einziges Manko dieser bemerkenswerten Scheibe ist lediglich die kurze Spielzeit von gerade mal 20 Minuten, da hätte ich mir gern noch mehr gewünscht! Ansonsten bleibt nur zu sagen, dass die Italiener mit ihrem melancholischem Gothic Rock auf jeden Fall auf dem richtigen Weg sind. Da sich HIM ja scheinbar, zumindest was Qualität angeht, aus diesem Genre verabschiedet haben, ist also viel Platz für hoffnungsvolle Newcomer und SO COLD sind sicherlich einer davon!

Da haben wir nun So Cold aus Italien. Eine Gothic-Metal Band die in den Zeiten der überschwappenden Welle dieser Musik versucht darauf aufzuspringen und nicht vom Surfbrett zu kippen. Mal sehen obs gelingt

Es ist von den ersten Tönen an klar. Es handelt sich um typischen, reinen Gothic-Rock. Ich habe immer ein bisserl Probleme damit sowas Metal zu nennen. Nicht weil ich die Musik ablehne, sondern eher weils damit echt nix zu tun hat. Die beiden Sachen die mir zu allererst aufgefallen sind ist einmal die etwas dünn ausgefallene Produktion und zum anderen die wirklich gute Stimme des Sängers Michele. Gut, ersteres kann man gerade bei Eigenproduktionen entschuldigen und zweiteres ist, meiner Meinung nach, das große Plus der Band. Die Musik ist zwar durchgehend melodiös aber hängen bleibt nicht viel. Zwischendurch klingt das ganze etwas nach HIM auf Schlaftablette. Das Songwriting lässt etwas zu wünschen übrig aber man hört das da noch ne Menge Potential drin ist. Gerade mit diesem starken Sänger kann man noch vieles rausholen wenn es So Cold gelingt einige bessere, ohrwurmträchtigere Melodien zu finden. So bleibt das ganze im guten Mittelfeld. Platz nach oben ist sicherlich gegeben und ich bin fest davon überzeugt, dass man in Zukunft noch einen großen Schritt machen kann.

Alles beginnt damit, dass fünf junge Männer aus dem italienischen Triest ihre Vorliebe für finnischen Gothic Metal der 90er-Jahre entdecken. Nicht untalentiert machen sie sich an eigene Kompositionen und legen Ende März 2006 ihre Fünf-Track-CD "A Touch of..." vor. Was hier zu hören ist, ähnelt allerdings den Vorbildern aus dem hohen Norden derart, dass von innovativer Kunst sicher nicht die Rede sein kann. Gleichwohl:

Track eins mit dem Titel '...Rain' ist eine lässige Midtemponummer mit schleppenden Basslinien und durchaus eingängiger Melodie, bei der die typische Gothic-Machart bereits erkennbar ist. Das folgende, zunächst langsam beginnende 'Opening' entwickelt sich recht bald zu einer flotten Nummer, die ebenfalls unschwer den Weg in die Gehörwindungen findet. Sänger Michele lässt dabei erquickliches Gesangstalent erkennen. Seine schwere, tiefe Stimme trägt nicht unerheblich dazu bei, das typische Gothic-Feeling beim Hörer zu erzeugen.

Allerdings könnte man meinen, dass es nicht Michele ist, der da zwitschert, sondern vielleicht Ville Laihiala von SENTENCED, J-P Leppäluoto von CHARON oder dass die Herren von PARADISE LOST hier mitgespielt haben. Das nimmt ein bisschen den Schwung für die folgenden beiden Stücke, von denen besonders 'The Deceiver' schwermütig und zäh dahin fließt. Track fünf, 'Black Harmony' nimmt mit gesteigertem Tempo wieder etwas Fahrt auf und animiert mit rhythmisch-rauer Gitarre zum ... nein, zum Headbanging nicht, aber immerhin zum Mittanzen. Tatsächlich kann man sich alle Songs der vorgelegten Scheibe gut als Clubnummern vorstellen. Tanzbar sind sie alle. Nach gut zwanzig Minuten ist das überschaubare Werk dann auch schon wieder zu Ende.

Fazit: Die Melodien gehen unkompliziert ins Ohr, es wird nicht gefrickelt, und von progressiven Akustiksalti bleiben wir verschont. Technisch handelt es sich bei der Eigenproduktion um eine ansprechende Arbeit, die sich ausreichend kraftvoll aus den Boxen der Anlage in den Raum ergießt. Eigentlich ist doch alles in Ordnung! Und trotzdem zünden SO COLD irgendwie nicht so richtig. Und das liegt unzweifelhaft daran, dass man sich des Eindruckes nicht erwehren kann, all das schon einmal gehört zu haben. Aus dem Schatten der musikalischen Vorbilder haben sich SO COLD nämlich noch so gar nicht gelöst. Wer sich nach dem Dahinsterben von SENTENCED nach einem gleichartigen Ersatz sehnt, der darf also bei SO COLD Zwischenstation machen, den Musikern wäre es aber zu wünschen, wenn sie künftig mehr an Eigenprofil gewinnen würden. Denn das Abziehbild der Großen seines Genres zu bleiben, ist langfristig weder für die Künstler noch für das Publikum gewinnbringend.

Anspieltipps: Kiss The Scythe, Black Harmony

So Cold is a new gothic-metal crossover hailing from northern Italy. Their desire to create music in the vein of Him, Sentenced, and other European gothic-metal pays off on A Touch Of…. Resonating choruses with melodic breaks, thundering guitars, and distant drums comprise …Rain, the CDs opening track. Michele’s outstanding vocals dominate many of the tracks, breathing life into what would otherwise be atypical sounding pieces. Aside from the vocals, Black Harmony is also driven by the powerful guitars that never get too aggressive or dictate the overall feel of the piece. A Touch Of… is a strong release for a band that is just beginning to get their feet wet.

With an invitation to join their Dark Harmony clutched firmly in our hands we delve into this Italian bands sound with anticipation running fluently through our viens. Following our journey we emerge through the other side unscathed, enthused and bristling with excitement.

Crap introductions aside, our foray into the world of So Cold is one which we relished. Its not often that a band can wash over you and draw you into their world to the extent that this highly regarded band has done. From beginning to end this as yet unsigned outfit never fail to impress with their own take on that classic Finnish Gothic Sound. Self described as being like the 'pouring rain', the band display a potential that so many fall short of.

Epic passages of dark rock sweep across this self released CD, all of which are constructed to entice the listener into each song where they are then taken on a journey where the outcome can only be an uplifting experience. The musicians involved obviously are well rehearsed and although possessing a talent many would kill for are not overbearing on the material offered. Instead steady restraint is offered, which enhances each and every song. If you like your Metal along the same lines as Sinamore, Paradise Lost and the excellent Tenebre, it is fair to say you are going to fall deeply in love with So Cold.

So Cold est une formation italienne originaire de Trieste et pratique un métal sombre à la croisé de Paradise Lost, Type o Negative, Entwine, ou bien encore Him. Mélange au combien intéressant et propice à attirer mon attention.
Ce premier EP fort bien produit est à classer parmi le Métal Gothique mais aussi comme OVNI sur la scène italienne visiblement peu enclin à ce style de musique. C’est que de l’autre coté des alpes il est sans doute préférable de chercher à copier Rhapsody.

Coté musique donc, avec toutes les formations citées plus haut, on sait à quoi s’attendre, cependant So Cold a véritablement su absorber toutes ses influences, même si ici où là on retrouve quelques sonorités des formations près-cité. Le chant de Michele rappelle un peu celui de Peter Steele (Type o Negative) lors des passage plus sombre ou de Mika Tauriainen (Entwine). L’accent italien est certes fortement prononcé mais confère à la musique un coté plus chaud, plus doux, qui fait que le son de So Cold reste mélancolique et n’atteint jamais la sensation de véritable tristesse.

« …Rain » rappelle par ses mélodies le meilleur de Him . On se laisse facilement bercer par la douceur des riffs, les claviers et violons font le reste du travail. « Opening » est un court morceau qui nous entraîne vers « Kiss the Scythe », une belle composition assez proche de ce que peu faire Entwine. « The Deciever » est une composition plus lourde, la rythmique lancinante rappelle un peu Type O Negative ou certains titres de Paradise Lost époque Draconian Times. L’accent italien donne vraiment un coté personnel à la formation, il serait d’ailleurs dommage de perde cette identité au fils du temps. Les arrangements placés ici ou là, sont aussi fort agréables et donnent indéniablement de la profondeur au titre. Enfin « Black Harmony », au forte influence de Paradise Lost est aussi un morceau très sympathique qui ravira les fans du genre.

Pour ce premier EP, les Italiens ont vraiment fait du bon travail. Ne reste qu’à concrétiser tout cela sur album. En essayant peut-être de gagner un poil en identité, sans pour autant chercher à effacer cet accent si beau, qui rend finalement So Cold unique.

Actualmente Finlandia es una de las mas grandes exportadoras de bandas de gothic metal (que yo prefiero catalogar como gothic rock) del estilo de HIM, Lacrimas Profundere, Beyond The Void (pese a que estas dos últimas bandas no son finlandesas), Sentenced, Reflexion, Charon y Sinamore, siendo estos últimos los que mas se diferencian del resto.

Pues bien, aquí tenemos una banda nueva que intenta hacerse de un lugar junto a las bandas antes mencionadas, pero esta vez no provienen ni de Alemania ni de Finlandia. So Cold es la banda en cuestión, y provienen nada más y nada menos que de la hermosa Italia.

A Touch Of es el nombre con el que banda ha bautizado su primer demo, completamente auto-producido ya que los chicos aún se encuentran sin casa disquera.

El tema Rain es el encargado de abrir este material, que déjenme decirles, para ser un demo independiente se escucha muy bien. Rain es un tema sumamente dolido y melancólico, musical y líricamente, dos aspectos en que la banda ha demostrado verdadero talento y eso es digno de apreciarse. El vocalista de la banda, Michele, prueba tema tras tema en este demo que tiene buenas facultades vocales y que sabe aprovecharlas muy bien. Suena algo similar al señor Juha-Pekka Leuppaluoto de Charon.

El tercer tema se encuentra precedido por una intro lenta (titulada simplemente Opening) que incrementa el nivel de tristeza dejado tras escuchar la hermosa letra de Rain, y que sirve de punto intermedio entre la antes mencionada y lo que será Kiss The Scythe, un tema con cierto nivel de potencia y que conforme avanza permite enamorarse más y más de ella. No cuenta con demasiados cambios de ritmo, pero sin embargo les aseguro que el tema no se torna monótono en lo absoluto.

A continuación una hermosa casi-balada con unas guitarras alucinantes, un pequeño momento de violín sumamente hermoso y un nivel de melancolía superior a todo lo que ya habíamos oído hasta el momento. The Deceiver es la canción de la que les hablo, y a mi gusto es la mejor de todo este material, musical y líricamente (aunque en este último aspecto vemos la tendencia de estos chicos de repetir mucho la palabra “cold”).

Ahora vamos de vuelta a un sonido un poco menos deprimido con Black Harmony, en donde el bajo bien podría traer a la mente el cover que los señores de H.I.M. hicieran del tema de Chris Isaac titulado Wicked Game. Este es el cierre del demo y aunque resulta agradable escucharlo no me parece tan impresionante como los temas anteriores, excepto por el solo instrumental que si deja un tanto con la boca abierta.

En síntesis, So Cold siguen la línea de los artistas mencionados al principio de la reseña, como suele pasar en este género, su sonido no revolucionará lo que ya conocemos de este tipo de bandas, pero tienen mucha calidad en sus composiciones y pueden tranquilamente hacerse de un muy buen lugar junto a quienes parecen ser sus modelos a seguir. Las letras son definitivamente de lo mejor y Michel en la voz es sin duda un digno rival para los vocalistas de cualquiera de las bandas ya mencionadas.

Nowadays Finland is one of the biggest exporters of gothic metal bands with a sound similar to HIM, Lacrimas Profundere, Beyond The Void (even though these last two ones are from Germany), Sentenced, Reflexion, Charon, Sinamore,etc, being these last ones the ones who sound less similar to the others.

So well, here we have a new band who tries to get an own place next to the bands mentioned before, but this time the band doesn’t come neither from Finland nor from German. They call themselves “So Cold” and come from the beautiful Italy.

“A Touch Of…” is the name the band has used to name their debut demo, completely self-released due to the fact that the boys do not have a record company yet. Still their demo sounds really great, something not so common in self-produced material.

The song “Rain” is the opening track of this record, a wonderful, sad and melancholic song, which musically and lyrically is great and proves that this band can rock the stage with their compositions.
Vocalist Michel shows us song after song his high singing faculties, sometimes he even reminded me of singer Juha-Pekka from Charon.
Guitarrist Giorgio wrote the beautiful lyrics for all the songs on this record so, hats down to him! those who love Ville Valo and Mikko Heikkilä lyrics are surely gonna love Giorgio's poetry.

Second track, simple entitled Opening works as a very sad and perfect introduction for the third track called Kiss The Scythe, one a little bit heavier than the others and one of those tracks you love more and more as you listen to it. It doesn’t have many changes of rhythm but I assure you the song never becomes boring.

4th track is called The Deceiver. It’s the typical slow-song which almost sound like a balad and contains some spectacular guitar riffs, a little and beautiful violin moment (heard during the instrumental solo) and also more melancholy and sadness than all the other tracks.
To me this is the best song on the album, my favorite tune and lyrics (just one little detail: at this point we notice the word “cold” has been very present in this demo).

Now we get back the not-so-sad sound with Black Harmony. The music kind of reminds of HIM’s cover of Wicked Game by Chris Isaak. This one is the last song on “A Touch Of…” and has an amazing solo, although it’s my least favorite on the whole demo.

What can I say? This band might not be the one that comes to create a new style of gothic metal, but they aren’t just one more gothic metal band. They’ve got something that’s not so common these days and it’s called “talent”, which allows them to create high quality compositions. Michel’s voice and Giorgio’s lyrics are definitely great enough to be compared with the best works of Mikko Heikkilä aspects, lyrical and vocal.

AMAZING that while most European metal singers manage to lose all but nuance in their accents, sounding - as Led Zeppelin did before them - distinctly American, So Cold sound as Italian as the puppets from the rather scary Dolmio advertisements. In this case, with their very HIM-like love metal, So Cold have an added. and rather good, darkly romantic gothicness. That said, some over-earnest sections are a little on the cringe-worthy side, as men singing about love might tend to be. As well as the slow yet pounding bass similarities, there are Ville-esque vocal histrionics and soaring guitar solos.

Na prvi pogled le imena članov banda (Michele, Giorgio, Max, Teo, Stefano) izdajo, da tu nimamo opraviti s kakšnimi novimi finskimi »depresivneži«, ki stopajo po stopinjah rojakov Sentenced, H.I.M., The 69 Eyes in podobnimi.
So Cold so naši zelo bližnji sosedi, prihajajo iz Trsta, igrajo pa čisto tipični finski gothic metal v stilu prvih dveh omenjenih bandov, najbolj pa spominjajo na Charon. Mogoče prav zaradi tega, ker je vokalistova barva glasu in melodičen način petja še najbolj podoben njihovemu frontmanu. V petih skladbah So Cold dobro zadanejo značilno finsko melanholijo. Gre za lepo tekoč, catchy material, ki ima v vsaki skladbi svoj prepoznaven vodilni riff, ki mestoma preide v blago soliranje. Kitare konkretno rockajo, vseeno pa glasba nima energičnosti Sentenced. Je pa zvok bolj surov, bolj zadušljiv, ne tako brezmadežno čist, kar pa je glede na to, da gre za demo posnet v lastni režiji, pričakovano. S tem demo posnetkom se band predstavlja kot čisto solidna underground gothic metal zasedba, na katero naj vržejo oko »finski melanholiki«. Prva priložnost za srečanje z njimi pa je prihajajoča Metal Mania v Komnu, kjer bodo So Cold nastopali.

At first glance only the names of band members (Michele, Giorgio, Max, Teo, Stefano) reveal the fact that we are not dealing with some new Finnish "depressed guys" following the steps of their compatriots Sentenced, H.I.M.,
The 69 Eyes and similar. So Cold are our close neighbours coming from Trieste and playing fully typical Finnish gothic metal in a manner of the two previously mentioned bands, mostly resembling Charon. Maybe exactly because
the colour of the vocalists voice and the melodical way of singing are very similar to their frontman. In the five songs So Cold very well catch the typical Finnish melancholy. It's about very fluent, catchy material that has a very recognizable leading riff in each piece which here and there passes over to temperate solos. The guitars are doing some solid rocking yet the music does not have the energeticness of Sentenced. But the sound is more raw, more suffocating, not so pure which is expected regarding that it is a home-made demo recording. With this demo the band represents itself as an entirely solid underground gothic metal cast that is to be checked out by "Finnish melancholics". The first opportunity to meet them is the forthcoming Metal Mania in Komen where So Cold will be performing.

Italialainen So Cold myöntää suoraan saatekirjeessään, että vaikutteita heidän melodiapitoiseen goottimetalliinsa on haalittu suuresti suomalaisten heimoveljien edesottamuksista. Yhtyeen ominaissoundi kuulostaakin tietynlaiselta yhdistelmältä HIM:iä ja edesmennyttä Sentencediä. Pieniä vastaavuuksia on havaittavissa The 69 Eyesinkin materiaaliin, vaikkei ko. orkesterikaan mikään persoonallisuuden lottovoitto ole.

Orkesterin musisointi pohjautuu vahvasti alakuloisien, mutta tarttuvien melodioiden varaan. Itse biisit eivät sävellyksiensä omaperäisyydellä iloittele, mutta melodisuudella ja vokalisti Michelen matalalla, mutta särmikkäällä laulannalla tuodaan materiaaliin sisältöä. Orkesterin puutteeksi paljastuu sävellysideoiden tavanomaisuus. Melodiakulut ovat perin toimivia, mutta minkäänlaista yllätysmomenttia biisimateriaali ei onnistu tarjoilemaan. Orkesterin edesottamukset ovatkin hetkittäin kun suoraan "Näin soitat goottimetallia" -oppikirjasta.

Italialaiseksi kokoonpanoksi So Cold kuulostaa yllättävän skandinaaviselta ja ellei saatteessa olisi mainittu yhtyeen kotimaata, luulisinkin orkesterin tulevan Suomesta. Näin ehkä myös siksi, että orkesterin nimivalintakin ohjaa enemmän pohjoismaihin kuin jalkapallohulluuden kourissa olevaan saapasvaltioon.

Band called So Cold from Italy admits in their accompanying letter that they have taken influenses for their melodic gothic metal from finnish bands. Bands specific sound seems to be a combination of HIM and already deceased Sentenced. Also some similarities are discovered with The 69 Eyes even though The 69 Eyes has not much personality of their own.

Bands music is based on strongly melancholyc but catchy melodies. Composition are not so original but with good melodies and bands vocalists, Micheles low and edged singing brings some content in songs. Bands lack is that composition ideas are really common. Melody courses are working but there are no suprises in song material. Occasionally bands work seems to be from textbook; "How to play gothic metal".

So Cold sounds suprisingly scandinavien for an italian band. In fact, you might think they are finnish, if the accompanying letter wouldn't tell otherwise. Name So Cold also indicates more in northern countries than grazy football fans bootland.

So Cold is fortunately enough a band from Italy that doesn’t play power metal like majority of other bands hailing from that part of the world. They are actually quite opposite and thanx God for that. The music So Cold is presenting for us here on this 5-tracker cd-r A Touch of…is simply gothic metal. It reminds me a lot of Anathema, Sentenced, Charon and even Type o Negative. First two tracks opener “…Rain” and the following “Opening” are almost the same, I mean with the same pace, and with what I would describe as heavy rock gothic sound ala H.I.M. and there’s no reason why not to compare it to H.I.M. cause the guys actually mention H.I.M. to be one of their biggest influences. Central part of the album is maybe the best track “Kiss the Scythe” with very interesting lyrics and very good progressive passages where you can hear some violins making this song very romantic in a way, I guess. In this part of the album some doom elements are more present than before – diversity was definitely good fuel to this Goth fire! “The Deceiver” shows the band in another but never the less good light, showing all their musical capacities, creating great atmosphere with great vocals. “Black Harmony” is the last song closing this black chapter of So Cold story with lyrics concerning death, pain and human weakness. So if you’re were (or still are?) a fan of the 90s Finnish Gothic scene and bands like Charon, Sentenced and HIM then I can highly recommend you this demo cd. Even though I’m not the biggest fan of this genre I must say that I see a lot of potential to this band if they just continue recording and presenting their music very seriously.

I So Cold, triestini, si affacciano su mercato discografico con ‘A Touch Of…’, EP autoprodotto per la band friulana. Il five-piece è dedito a un gothic metal intrigante e sfaccettato nel quale confluiscono varie sfumature sonore. L’opener ‘…Rain’, insieme alla conclusiva ‘Black Harmony’, sono gli episodi più orecchiabili del lotto, due song di heavy/rock melodico e sensuale in cui potremo cogliere influenze molto vicine agli H.I.M. Ma nonostante questa facciata “easy”, i due brani sono tutt’altro che banali: i friulani assicurano dei tappeti di riff piacevoli ma altrettanto energici e i refrain sono davvero avvincenti.
La parte centrale dell’album (‘Opening’ e ‘Kiss The Scythe’) suona invece più “impegnata”. Qui l’orecchiabilità lascia progressivamente spazio alla malinconia, tastiere e sognanti violini si ritagliano dei romantici cammei. I ritmi si fanno più lenti e i suoni rarefatti, si sentono richiami ad un gothic/doom vicino agli ultimi Sentenced e agli Anathema di ‘Eternity’. Molto buona anche ‘The Deceiver’, un’altra song lenta e dal forte pathos, che forse meglio rappresenta la capacità dei So Cold di mischiare un sound malinconico a refrain di presa.
L’unico appunto che ci sentiamo di fare alla band riguarda la prestazione del vocalist Michele: sul lato pratico la performance è ottima, la voce, profonda e interpretativa, è perfetta per rendere le atmosfere del genere proposto, tuttavia la pronuncia dell’inglese andrebbe riveduta e migliorata. Un piccolo neo che comunque non toglie valore a questo buon lavoro, che ci mostra una band in forma e con delle idee suscettibili di futuri sviluppi.
